dunker tanker (2 dunk 2 tank) [preview]

ok decided not to kill myself this week trying to get this actually finished.

Here's the beginning of my first proper dunk tank remix.  (spoiler: the last 5 weeks have all been dunk tank """"""""remixes"""""""")
the original: https://weeklybeats.com/wangus/music/dunk-tank

closest inspiration would be rome in silver's Fool vs. Fool 2022 .  also thinking about the kinds of reimaginings Savant pulled on Alchemist pt2.

m8, all synthesis, no samples.

----------

the groove came first.  heavy downbeat.  It's actually a 200BPM project, so I get finer resolution for some off-kilter hits.

This is the first time I'm really experimenting with the wavetable options in the FM engine.  the main bass stab is a wavetable voice, i think the "asymmetry" table, layered with a subby 2op deal.  (A>B + C + D i think).
A whole second track doubles it with macrosynth "harmonics", which made the original dunk tank bass.  This is gonna end up 8 maximally-utilized tracks to fit all I want to layer in...

The kick/snare are solid.  The rest of the percussion needs some work.  My fav so far is the ride-cymbal-bell kind of sound, which is a hypersynth patch.  Hypersynth is solid for crafting hats.  Set an arbitrary "chord" spread out randomly, then turn up the swarm parameter to taste, then use SIN/FOLD/WRAP limiter to balance the metallic-ness and noise (wavefolding the cluster of detuned oscillators tends to smush it into more-white-noise kind of tone).

The lead says, hey remember the original simple square wave with some dirty modulation?  What if it were just All Dirt.  Big ol hypersynth unison, except for one voice doing a tritone.  crunchy.  Some swarm/width modulation sends it flying.

Then the chords, hey remember the original train-whistle-sounding warbly fluttery random-panned out-of-tune pads?  What if they were uniform center-panned, and approximately-just intonation for uncanny minimal shimmer?  (straight center-pan was a bit boring, so I did add a left-channel allpass EQ to splat it into a weird broken image)

so ya, i'm thinking of the elements of the original but exaggerated, either positively or negatively.

you're not ready for the section that will come next.  (i wasn't; that's why you don't get to hear it this week)

rip wait I didn’t realize i had like fully inverted L/R phase on the chords.  it disappears in mono mix.  gotta fix that.

i'm not even ready for this, how could i be ready for next week?

this is so freaky

the time skips like 1:17 are the best part

excited for dunk tank 3 tokyo dunk

grateful you didn't kill yourself would have been so awkward

person: wangus has died!
everyone: * sad *
me: "ugh over THIS track?  really?"

Absolute banger of a track! Loved that!

love the beat and how it all builds. that distorted pad from 1:18 onwards is so cool!

This isn't really my kind of electronic music, but I like the sound design in this.
